A leader in consultation and advocacy
Round Lake Consulting is an Indigenous-informed archaeological and community development consultancy dedicated to supporting First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities across Turtle Island. Our team brings together archaeologists, heritage specialists, and facilitators with deep experience in cultural resource management and Indigenous engagement. We believe that communities are the rightful stewards of their past, present, and future. Our work prioritizes Indigenous knowledge systems, traditional values, and long-term community goals.
Our Services

Archaeological Consulting
At Round Lake Consulting, we provide comprehensive archaeological services and technical review that fully comply with the Standards and Guidelines for Consultant Archaeologists established by the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism (formerly MTCS). Our work meets all provincial regulatory requirements, from Stage 1 assessments to Stage 4 mitigations, and technical review of archaeological reports.
But compliance is only our starting point.
We go beyond the minimum by centering the rights, interests, and knowledge of Indigenous Nations in every step of the process. Our approach is grounded in meaningful collaboration and the principles of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent. Whether we’re conducting a background study, walking a field, or excavating a site, we work with communities, not just for them.
Our Comprehensive Approach Includes:

Early and ongoing engagement with Indigenous governments, Lands & Resources departments, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers.
Co-created field strategies that reflect community values, cultural protocols, and territorial knowledge.
Opportunities for training and employment of community members as field technicians, monitors, or cultural liaisons.
Transparent communication at all phases of the project, including plain-language summaries, community presentations, and shared data access.
Recommendations that go beyond mitigation to support long-term cultural site protection, land stewardship, and intergenerational knowledge transmission.
We believe that archaeological work should serve not only compliance but reconciliation. Our services reflect a commitment to ethical practice, cultural respect, and shared authority over the interpretation and stewardship of heritage.

Environmental Consulting
Round Lake Consulting provides environmental consultation services that meet and exceed the requirements set out by Ontario’s environmental assessment processes, including those under the Environmental Assessment Act, Environmental Protection Act, and relevant federal legislation. Our work ensures that technical assessments, permitting, and reporting are completed with scientific rigor and full regulatory compliance.
But regulatory compliance alone is not enough.
Our approach is grounded in the understanding that Indigenous Nations are stewards of their lands and waters, and that meaningful consultation must center their sovereignty, knowledge, and priorities. We work closely with Indigenous communities to co-develop environmental strategies that reflect cultural, ecological, and spiritual relationships to land.
Our Enhanced Approach Includes:

Early, respectful, and ongoing engagement with Indigenous governments, Guardians programs, Lands & Resources departments, and Knowledge Holders.
Incorporation of Indigenous Knowledge (IK) alongside Western science to create holistic environmental baselines and impact assessments.
Support for community-driven monitoring programs, including training, mentorship, and technical capacity-building.
Culturally relevant cumulative impact assessments, including considerations for traditional land use, sacred sites, species at risk, and climate change.
Collaborative development of mitigation and restoration strategies that prioritize the long-term health of ecosystems and Indigenous cultural continuity.
Whether supporting environmental assessments, renewable energy projects, remediation efforts, or natural resource planning, Round Lake Consulting delivers services that are technically sound, community-led, and ecologically responsible.
We don’t just assess the land, we work to protect it for the generations to come.

Capacity Support
At Round Lake Consulting, we believe true partnership means investing in the long-term strength, autonomy, and leadership of Indigenous communities. Our capacity-building services go far beyond one-off workshops or short-term training. We work alongside communities to develop skills, systems, and strategies that endure.
We tailor every program to reflect a community's priorities, strengths, and ways of knowing. Whether you're building a cultural heritage department, establishing a Guardians program, or supporting youth in entering the heritage and environmental fields, we offer hands-on, culturally grounded support that respects your vision and values.
Our Capacity-Building Services Include:

Community-led training in archaeology, environmental monitoring, GIS, and regulatory processes
Mentorship and employment pathways for youth, guardians, and land stewards
Support for governance development, including policy writing, consultation protocols, and heritage protection plans
Technical skill development, including report writing, data management, and digital mapping
Workshop facilitation and planning, designed to build internal capacity and promote intergenerational knowledge-sharing
Grant writing and funding navigation, to help communities secure the resources they need to grow
We understand that capacity building is not just about bringing knowledge in, but also about supporting the knowledge that’s already there. Our role is to listen, collaborate, and walk beside communities as they define and achieve their own goals.
Whether you're starting a new initiative or building on existing strengths, Round Lake Consulting is here to support sovereignty, self-determination, and sustainable growth on your terms.

About Our Company
Round Lake Consulting is an archaeological and community development consultancy based in Windsor, Ontario, on the traditional territory of the Three Fires Confederacy: the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi Peoples. Our name, Round Lake, is inspired by the Ojibwe word Waawiyatanong, meaning “where the water bends”— a traditional name for the Detroit River that reflects its deep cultural and geographical significance.
